Commonwealth, State and Territory Housing and Community Services Ministers met today in Brisbane to discuss implementation and progress of a range of new initiatives to help combat housing affordability, remote Indigenous housing and homelessness. Ministers acknowledged the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) and acknowledged the work of the COAG Housing Working Group in the delivery of a significant package of investment for housing of nearly $10 billion.

Ministers noted the Australian Government Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Reforms announced in the 2007 Federal Budget. Building on this it was also noted that this significant reform strategy will be negotiated by the Australian Government with States and Territories through bilateral agreements to address the housing backlog and overcrowding in remote Indigenous communities.

Implementation of the new policy, and the strategies outlined in the ten year statement, will provide better housing and housing-related infrastructure, which will lead to improved environmental health outcomes for Indigenous people.
