The meeting was jointly chaired by the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Australian Government Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and the Hon Richard Wynne, Victorian Minister for Housing and Local Government, and hosted by Mr Jon Stanhope MLA, Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services.

Commonwealth, State and Territory Housing and Community Services Ministers met today in Brisbane to discuss implementation and progress of a range of new initiatives to help combat housing affordability, remote Indigenous housing and homelessness. Ministers acknowledged the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) and acknowledged the work of the COAG Housing Working Group in the delivery of a significant package of investment for housing of nearly $10 billion.

The Australian Government has been working with State and Territory Governments to implement the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

State and Territory Ministers welcomed Commonwealth Government initiatives and commitment to improving housing outcomes across Australia, through a broad based National Affordable Housing Agreement, and are looking forward to the implementation in the coming year.

Ministers noted the Australian Government Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Reforms announced in the 2007 Federal Budget. Building on this it was also noted that this significant reform strategy will be negotiated by the Australian Government with States and Territories through bilateral agreements to address the housing backlog and overcrowding in remote Indigenous communities.
